Best Iron Man Moments in the MCU
What are the best moments from Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
Top Ten MCU Iron Man Moments!
For ten years now, Iron Man has brought audiences some of the best movie moments ever! It's a quite a journey we've gone on with Tony Stark over the past decade. Robert Downey Jr. has played the part he was born to play so well that it's tough to pick out just ten of his best scenes in these awesome films. The character has appeared in nine films so far in leading roles, supporting parts, and cameos, but somehow he's consistently been a stand out and has held this universe together while also being the one who kicked it all off in 2008. Check out what we thought and let us know your favorites in the comments below.
10. Iron Man Saves Spider-Man
At the beginning of his long journey, no one would've expected Iron Man to take responsibility and gain wisdom, but he has now even taken on the role of mentor to a young superhero named Spider-Man. After Spidey gets in over his head while stopping an illegal arms deal, Iron Man has to step in and put a ferry full of civilians back together after it was ripped in half by The Vulture's devastating alien weapon. However, the heart-to-heart Tony Stark has with teenager Peter Parker after the rescue takes place is what makes this moment impactful, important, and character-driven.
9. Iron Man Tussles With Thor
When two egos as big as theirs meets it's bound to end in fisticuffs. While it's due to a simple misunderstanding, it's a joy to watch these two heroes clash. Most wouldn't think a man in a metal suit could to toe-to-toe with an alien with superhuman abilities, but Iron Man proves his mettle in battle with Thor. Both heroes use their considerable strength and weapons to cause the other some real damage, but the quips and banter between the two is what makes it so much fun to watch. This is the only way these two were going to greet one another.
8. Iron Man's First Flight
It's an absolute joy to see Tony take flight as Iron Man for the first time. The great line of dialogue, "Sometimes you gotta run before you can walk" sets up this scene perfectly. The whole movie we're waiting to see what this new suit can do and the first thing most people would do with it is fly through the air at super sonic speeds. It's a surprisingly thrilling sequence with no antagonist in sight (unless you count gravity and the icy atmosphere). Tony is having a blast one minute and freaked out the next as he gets the hang of the new suit. Also, the hilarious reaction of the boy on the ferris wheel makes me laugh every time.
7. Iron Man Meets Captain America
After finding out Captain America is alive and well Tony was certainly not excited to meet his estranged father's best buddy. He's cordial enough when they run into each other while on mission to save the planet, but he wastes no time making fun of old man Steve Rogers who isn't up to speed on the modern world just yet. It's a contentious relationship all the way through the first Avengers movie, but they learn to respect one another and join forces to save the world. Neither of them could imagine what an important relationship they'd develop and how it would effect, not only their fellow Avengers, but the rest of the entire world.
6. Iron Man Creates Ultron
The way Tony Stark deals with the events of the Battle of New York, in which alien beings invaded Earth, is by meddling with things he probably shouldn't. He wants "a suit of armor around the world" to protect humanity from any potential threat. His solution is an artificial intelligence, he dubs Ultron. This A.I. takes on an indestructible body of vibranium, and seeks to fulfill his mission to save the world by destroying half of humanity since our self-destructive nature negates our ability to forge our own destiny. It's by far Tony's biggest mistake and he owns up to it by reforming the Avengers to take Ultron down. This one choice sums up his character perfectly as a genius with hubris and nothing but good intentions.
5. Iron Man vs. Thanos
In the latest Avengers film, Iron Man takes on the super-powered alien being Thanos in a mano-a-mano battle for the ages. It's an intense fight for the fate of the universe, and Iron Man pulls out all the stops, unleashing the full power of his incredible nanotech suit on the Mad Titan. Unfortunately, Iron Man simply can't hold his own for long enough as Thanos gains the upper hand and defeats our hero. It's a shocking and sinister moment without compare most are still reeling from. This is the confrontation we've been waiting for for almost a decade, and it is perhaps the most thrilling and emotional scene in the movie.
4. The Clean Slate Protocol
In the final moments of Iron Man 3 we get a finale like no other. No one was expecting the movie to end with the Iron Avenger blowing up all of his suits in a visually stunning sequence. He does it to prove to Pepper Potts (and himself) that she's the most important thing in his life. Throughout the film his obsession with making more suits to protect her nearly tears them apart, so it's a powerful character moment to see him get rid of what was getting between them all along. Tony Stark puts Iron Man in his place and proves that the suit doesn't make the man. It's the man that makes the suit.
3. Iron Man Goes To War With Captain America
The collateral damage caused by the Avengers in their various battles around the world, causes the government steps in to make sure the Avengers are only called into action when a United Nations panel deems it absolutely necessary. Unfortunately, Captain America doesn't agree with this agenda claiming it tramples individual rights, while Iron Man is more than willing to be put in check since the guilt of Ultron still weighs heavy on his shoulders. It's a great character arc for Tony as he goes from careless capitalist in the first Iron Man movie to a responsible citizen in the third Captain America film. The final confrontation between Stark and Rogers is brutal and heartbreaking as personal stakes rise to a whole new level and we find our heroes broken and the world defenseless.
2. Iron Man Builds Mark I
When Tony Stark is captured by a terrorist organization known as The Ten Rings, he is completely helpless and hopeless. However, a wise old man is there to help in the form of fellow tech-genius Yinsen. It's Yinsen who helps Stark find a reason to survive and escape his cavernous prison in a makeshift suit of armor. Seeing the two build the suit is cool but seeing them connect and build a relationship is even more important than the Mark I. It's a great escape sequence that follows, but that's all because of the time we spend on the build up to that moment with these important characters we come to care about.
1. "I am Iron Man."
The single biggest moment in the MCU is when Iron Man reveals his secret identity to the world. It's a delightful way to end the film and is a huge surprise to people who are used to the traditional secret identity trope from most superhero movies. Agent Phil Coulson gives Stark a cover story that Iron Man is his bodyguard which is exactly what Stark told people in the comic books which makes the fake out even better. Changing things up in such a major way made a bold statement that this franchise was going to be totally different from anything audiences had seen before. After ten years we can say that that is certainly true.
