Best Moments From Comic-Con 2018
The Con is over! Now we count down our favorite moments!
10. First Look At DC Universe Series Titans
Our first look at the DC Universe streaming series leaves much to be desired. The dialogue is very generic and the tone seems to be extremely dark. It just doesn't fit these fun-loving characters we know from the comic books. However, the production values and visual effects look excellent, as do the wonderful costumes. Hopefully this one ends up being better than this trailer makes it seem.
9. Alita: Battle Angel Debuts New Trailer
The team behind Avatar, including James Cameron and Jon Landau, brings us a new film from director Robert Rodriguez titled, Alita: Battle Angel. This is based on a Japanese graphic novel or manga which follows the adventures of a cyborg in the distant future who seeks for the truth about her odd origins. The visual effects are really good, but there's still that uncanny valley thing that these effects wizards haven't quite got right yet. The action will be cool and the plot is intriguing, but nothing about the story or characters managed to fully grab our attention.
8. DC Universe Announces Stargirl Series
Adding to their already exhaustive list of upcoming original content, the DC Universe streaming service announced that they will bring fans a Stargirl series. The show will follow Courtney Whitmore, a teenage girl who joins the Justice Society of America to fight crime. She has the ability to fly and emits energy from her powerful staff all while dealing with normal teenage problems. It's a great a set up for the series and is made much more interesting by the inclusion of the JSA, a precursor to the Justice League featuring superheroes like Hawkman, Hourman, The Spectre, Mr. Terrific, Dr. Fate, The Atom, Dr. Mid-Nite, Sand, Wildcat, and Black Canary among others. This is one to watch for.
7. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Brings New Trailer
The second film in the Harry Potter prequel series Fantastic Beasts is only a few months away, so fans were glad to see new footage from the movie. This installment looks very similar to the last film with more emphasis on the larger wizarding world than that the first had. Johnny Depp is looking great as the villainous Grindelwald and you can tell Jude Law is having a blast as Dumbledore. This will be a fun-filled adventure, yet a darker entry in the series which fans of the franchise will no doubt eat up. That reveal at the end of the trailer is gonna be worth the price of admission.
6. First Godzilla: King of the Monsters Trailer Arrives
In the first trailer for the Godzilla sequel, actress Milly Bobby Brown looks like she's thinking, "I've seen Stranger Things, but this takes it to another level." She faces down giant monsters who are wrecking havoc on the planet in the new film in Warner Bros. and Legendary's MonsterVerse which began in 2014's Godzilla and continued in last year's Kong: Skull Island. The mega-franchise will culminate in Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020, so I'm expecting the big lizard to lose this round as he'll be facing off against Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. The trailer is a bit confusing as far as the story goes, but the monster mayhem looks awesome.
5. Star Wars: The Clone Wars Is Coming Back
The wishes of fans across the galaxy were granted when Dave Filoni and company announced that the hit animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars was coming back for one final season next year at their 10th anniversary panel. Filoni said that show will debut on the Disney streaming service in 2019 and feature 12 all-new episodes featuring Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka in the final days of the biggest conflict in the galaxy far, far away. The original cast is returning including Matt Lanter, James Arnold Taylor, and Ashley Eckstein for the series revival which will wrap up the storylines left unresolved for years. The series ran from 2008-2014, but went off the air when Disney purchased Lucasfilm and the series had to leave it's home on Cartoon Network. The teaser is epic and promises to deliver us the best season ever.
4. Young Justice Returns With First Footage From Outsiders
Another series returning after being cancelled way too soon is Young Justice. That show ran for only two seasons before it got the axe back in 2013. Now it's coming back with the same voice cast and behind-the-scenes team that brought the show to life originally. Along with the old favorites, new characters are set to join this season as the huge cliffhanger from season two finally gets a resolution. It looks like they're delivering the same quality animation, relatable characters, and complex storytelling the series is known for. This is one to watch. WARNING! Only watch the trailer you've seen the show as the first two minutes are a SPOILER-filled recap of the previous season.
3. DC's Shazam! Debuts Trailer
DC brought their best to the Con this year and one of the best parts was our first look at next year's Shazam! This movie looks like a total blast as we're in for a fun-filled romp following teenager Billy Batson who's granted super-powers by a Wizard to fight evil. The humor is on point, the action looks great, and the cast is perfect. Moviegoers could change their tune on the DC Films world after this movie since it's bringing a lighter tone and feels like the most unique and joyous character in DC's catalogue and superhero movies in general is coming to life. This is Tom Hanks' Big with super-powers, blending character-centered, situational comedy and action together for a high-flying adventure.
2. M. Night Brings First Glass Trailer
An unconventional superhero movie to say the least, Glass is the sequel to both Unbreakable and Split. All of these films are written and directed by mastermind M. Night Shyamalan who brought fans the first trailer for the movie. This one connects the previous two movies by bringing together Bruce Willis' David Dunn, James McAvoy's Kevin Wendell Crumb, and Samuel L. Jackson's Elijah Price a.k.a. Mr. Glass. It looks to keep the tone of the last two films as it feels like a psychological thriller with a superhero storyline. It seems as if Mr. Glass and The Beast team up, forcing Dunn to take them down, but I'm not sure how they end up in the mental institution and what role Sarah Paulson's shrink will play. It seems like it's gonna be an intense film and a worthy conclusion to this trilogy.
1. Aquaman Trailer Revealed by DC
The winner of Comic-Con 2018 was Aquaman! After the failure of Justice League, all eyes were on DC's most ambitious project to date. Director James Wan and crew took the stage and showed off our first look at footage from the film which revealed an epic adventure under the sea. It's got Jason Momoa having a good old time as the half-Atlantean, half-human heir to the throne of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis as he must battle his war-mongering half-brother Orm for the fate of the world. Amber Heard looks fantastic as Mera, playing the no-nonsense yin, to Momoa's wreckless yang. The world the filmmakers created deep below the surface is stunning and unlike anything seen before on film. This is the movie we need right now and will turn the biggest joke in the superhero world into the coolest of them all.
