Top 5 Movie Pirates
Since the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film is now on the horizon we count down the five best onscreen pirates!
5. Captain Hook
A dastardly villain, Disney's Captain Hook from the 1953 animated film Peter Pan is the perfect balance of menacing and silly. He's as persistent as they come and overall remains a good captain to his crew, although he certainly bullies Mr. Smee around. His fear of the Tick-Tock Croc humanizes him, and he's brilliantly voiced by Hans Conried who gives the performance of a lifetime in the role. Every time anyone thinks of Captain Hook (a character who's been around since J.M. Barrie wrote his 1904 play and has been played by various actors through the years) their mind usually races to this as the quintessential version of the character.
4. Dread Pirate Roberts
As played by Carey Elwes in Rob Reiner's 1987 film based on the William Goldman novel The Princess Bride, Dread Pirate Roberts is a mystery. The character technically is never onscreen because he doesn't exist. The name is simply passed from one pirate to the next over the years creating the illusion that the masked man is immortal. That's why he's on this list. Roberts does what makes any pirate a great one, he uses his mind as his weapon of choice, although he isn't too bad with a cutlass either.
