Top Ten Questions Raised In Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer
Check out our thoughts on the new Star Wars trailer!
10. Will Luke Skywalker Train Rey To Become A Jedi?
Most assumed the follow-up to The Force Awakens would begin with the training of Rey by Luke Skywalker in the ways of the Force to become a Jedi. However, the old Jedi master is reluctant to say the least. We'll get more into why later, but it's safe to say he's been in hiding all these years to get away from the conflict between the Light and Dark sides of the Force and wants nothing to do with another young Force-sensitive person in a battle to save the galaxy. It does look like he attempts to train her, but it doesn't seem to go very far. She's clearly very powerful and that frightens Skywalker for good reason. Again, more on this later, but it doesn't look like he actually trains her, at least not in the same way Yoda trained him on Dagobah.
9. Is Poe The New Leader Of The Resistance?
We only get a couple of shots of hot-shot pilot Poe Dameron in the new trailer, but it seems as though he's taking on a more prominent role in the Resistance. He encourages his fellow freedom fighters with these words of inspiration: "We are the spark that'll light the fire that'll burn the First Order down ." He seems to be in distress at this point which may indicate dark times for the Resistance as the First Order will no doubt be capitalizing on the fact that they destroyed the New Republic capital with Starkiller Base. While General Leia is in charge for now, her fate is uncertain, and she may be grooming Poe for leadership. Here we'll see the Resistance struggling to survive.
8. Is Captain Phasma Going To Kill Finn?
It seems as though Finn will go undercover back to his former stomping grounds in the First Order to help the Resistance gather valuable intelligence. However, it looks like he gets captured and locked in a duel with his old leader Captain Phasma. This will be a battle for the ages and proves that the First Order Captain will get more screen-time than she did in The Force Awakens. After suffering extensive injuries at the hand of Kylo Ren, it's surprising to see him bounce back so fast even with assistance from a bacta tank, and one has to wonder if he'll be able to go toe-to-toe with the most deadly soldier in the First Order. This could be the end of Finn.
7. Are Porgs The New Ewoks?
Everyone is freaking out about the porgs. Some think they are the most adorable things since Ewoks, while others think they'll be much more annoying than those fuzzy natives of Endor. Either way they're sure to cause some mayhem and get a few laughs out of the audience as long as they aren't as overused as that other lovable creature, Jar Jar Binks. They're natives of Ahch-To which is the island planet where Luke Skywalker dwells. It seems as though one is a stowaway aboard the Millennium Falcon much to the chagrin of Chewbacca I'm sure.
6. Is Chewbacca The New Pilot Of The Millennium Falcon?
We see the Falcon being piloted through the planet Crait as it's chased by TIE Fighters, and find out Chewbacca is at the controls. This may surprise some as many believed Rey would take over as pilot of the iconic ship after the passing of Han Solo. Others thought Poe may be the most likely candidate since his skills rival those of Solo's, and some also considered Finn to be the best choice. Having Chewy take over the ship he's been co-pilot of for all these years is the best choice, though. It's gonna be fun to see what he does in the new movie.
5. Is The First Order Going To Take Over The Galaxy?
As we talked about earlier, the First Order is on the rise after the successful use of their super-weapon, Starkiller Base, to annihilate the capital planets of the New Republic. The Resistance did destroy the base, but that isn't stopping the First Order from capitalizing on their victory and seizing power. Their forces are overwhelming the Resistance which is on the run since the enemy has discovered their whereabouts. Now it's an all-out war between the two factions which may spell doom for the small band of freedom fighters left in the galaxy.
4. Who Is Luke Skywalker Referring To?
We hear a few lines of dialogue in the trailer: One from Supreme Leader Snoke, one from Kylo Ren, one from Rey, and another from Luke Skwyalker. The line we hear from Luke is: "I've seen this raw strength only once before. It didn't scare me enough then. It does now." It looks like he's talking to Rey in this scene, but we aren't sure who he is talking about. Most assume it's Kylo Ren as he tried to train the boy then called Ben Solo, but was unable to bring him back from turning to the dark side. However, others think he's referring to his father Anakin Skywalker, but he could also be talking about Emperor Palpatine. I think he's referring to Kylo Ren, though, as this entire trailer, and the whole new trilogy, focuses on his nephew and Rey. Clearly, Luke is afraid which is never a good thing as we know that Yoda says, "Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering." Luke has experienced this firsthand when he left his own Jedi training early to save Han and Leia which ended up being a bad day for everyone involved. Hopefully, he comes to his senses soon enough this time.
3. Will Kylo Ren Kill General Leia?
It could be an example of tricky editing, but a portion of the trailer suggests that Kylo Ren, in his new TIE Silencer, will have his mother General Leia in his crosshairs. This highlights the conflict still within him as he struggles with the pull of the Light Side of the Force. We also see some type of bandage on the scar given to him by Rey at the end of The Force Awakens which hints at him becoming more and more like his grandfather Darth Vader. The lines he says over these images are, "Let the past die. Kill it if you have to. That's the only way to become what you were meant to be." He also is seen destroying his helmet which indicates to me that he doesn't want to be on the Dark Side any longer and in the rest of the trailer he isn't hiding his face. Many don't believe he can be redeemed after killing his father, but even Vader was turned back, so it's not too late for the former Ben Solo.
2. Who Is Supreme Leader Snoke Talking To?
A character shrouded in mystery, Supreme Leader Snoke has been theorized about since before The Force Awakens was released. I believe he's not connected to any character and is simply a new one who's been in hiding all along. He does have an interesting line in this trailer as he says, "When I found you, I saw raw untamed power, and beyond that something truly special." Many think he's talking about Kylo Ren which would makes sense. However, later he also says, "Fulfill your destiny." Over that line, we see him holding Rey midair with the Force as she screams. This reminds me of the scene between Emperor Palpatine and Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi as he assaults him with Force Lightning. So, he could have been talking about Rey all along. There's another moment which may indicate what's really going on here.
1. Will Rey Join The Dark Side?
At the end of the trailer we see Rey say, "I need someone to show me my place in all this." In what may be another bit of editing trickery, Kylo Ren is then seen holding out his hand to her. This strongly hints that Rey will join the Dark Side. If Luke Skywalker does not agree to train her it could send her on a mission to find a teacher who will. At the end of The Force Awakens as she is caught in a lightsaber duel with Kylo Ren he tells her that she needs a teacher and the he could show her the ways of the Force. Being rejected by Luke, separated from her friends, and confused by her past, Rey might be driven to join Kylo Ren and Snoke which would explain why Snoke tells her to fulfill her destiny. Snoke may also have the Force ability to brainwash people which would be unique and startling for everyone in the galaxy. Regardless, this looks to be a dark, intense adventure which will change everything in the Star Wars galaxy.
