Upcoming DC Films

Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have announced a lot of movie projects! Now let's take a look at which ones are coming up soon!

hello

Justice League

Justice League

The man that kicked off the DCEU with Man of Steel, Zack Sndyer, returns to direct the big-screen debut of the Justice League, but he left after filming to tend to a personal matter, so his friend and fellow director Joss Whedon stepped into rewrite and reshoot some scenes before the movie's release. Written by Chris Terrio, the movie will see Batman gathering meta-human heroes to build an alliance in hopes of saving the planet from an alien invasion. This one looks to be epic in scope and scale and features brighter colors and a lighter tone. Hopefully, we'll get to see Superman resurrected in his black suit.

Cast & Crew: Directed by Zack Snyder, written by Chris Terrior and Joss Whedon, and starring Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash, Ray Fisher as Victor Stone/Cyborg, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon, Joe Morton as Dr. Silas Stone, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Amber Heard as Mera, Billy Crudup as Henry Allen, and Ciaran Hinds as Steppenwolf.

Release Date: November 17, 2017

Aquaman

Aquaman

Aquaman is currently filming in Queensland, Australia under the leadership of The Conjuring director James Wan, and is based on a script by Kurt Johnstad. This one will be set after Justice League but have Arthur Curry in a game of thrones with his half-brother Orm as they battle for rule over the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. Further complicating matters will be Aquaman's mortal enemy the mercenary known as Black Manta who blames Aquaman for the death of his father. It's said to be an epic adventure inspired by Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Lord of the Rings.

Cast & Crew: Directed by James Wan,  written by Kurt Johnstad, starring Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Prince Orm/Ocean Master, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Dolph Lungren as King Nereus, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Black Manta's father, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry,  and Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna.

Release Date: December 21, 2018.

Shazam

Shazam

Earth to Echo scribe Henry Gayden is writing the screenplay for Shazam. The Rock has been cast to portray Black Adam, but he will not show up as the anti-hero in this film, instead opting to appear first in another movie and possibly show up in a sequel. Lights Out director David F. Sandberg is now set to direct and Zachary Levi has been cast in the title role with Asher Angel playing Billy Batson. This is expected to have a very light tone and be most fun DC Film to date since it's about a kid who gets superpowers, essentially making it Tom Hanks' Big with superpowers. It's gonna be a blast to see this story on screen.

Cast & Crew: Directed by David F. Sandberg, written by Henry Gayden, and Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, and Mark Strong.

Release Date: April 5, 2019.

Wonder Woman 2

Wonder Woman 2

This will be a sequel to this year's Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot will reprise her starring role and Patty Jenkins will return to direct the movie. Jenkins is already hard at work on the script with Geoff Johns and David Callahan. The story is rumored to be set in the 1980s and feature Wonder Woman working with the Americans as a spy to uncover the secrets of a Russian doomsday weapon. It's unknown how Pine will return as Trevor, but it will most likely be a flashback, dream sequence, or he could be playing a descendant of the American soldier. It's gonna be great o see her in another era as the character on a journey towards who she becomes in Justice League.

Cast & Crew: Patty Jenkins will direct from a script by Jenkins, Goff Johns, and David Callahan with Gal Gadot and Chris Pine set to return.

Release Date: December 13, 2019

Cyborg

Cyborg

After making a cameo as the character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, relative unknown actor Ray Fisher will appear again as Cyborg in Justice League, and finally in his own movie. No writers or directors have been announced. When DC Films first announced their upcoming slate of film Cyborg was a surprise inclusion, even to Fisher. It's unknown when this film will take place but it will most likely be after the events of Justice League. Some think DC and Warner Bros. will rework this into a Teen Titans film.

Cast & Crew: No announced writer or directed but Ray Fisher is set to star.

Release Date: April 3, 2020.

Green Lantern Corps

Green Lantern Corps

This film will ignore the 2011 film starring Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, opting to follow Hal Jordan and John Stewart in a buddy-cop-action-comedy in the same vein as Lethal Weapon. Penning the screenplay for Green Lantern Corps are David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes, but no director is attached. This could be a really fun buddy cop film in space. Pairing hotshot ace pilot Hal Jordan with the no-nonsense Marine John Stewart is a smart move which could pay off big time if they cast the right actors in those roles. Armie Hammer continues to be rumored for the part of Jordan while Denzel Washington is wanted to play Stewart.

Cast & Crew: No director is attached yet, but David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes are writing, and no cast has been announced.

Release Date: July 24, 2020.

Flashpoint

Flashpoint

Set to play The Flash is actor Ezra Miller who will be returning after his cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and his larger role in Justice League. Joby Harold is writing the script while the studio seeks a director with both Robert Zemekis and Matthew Vaughn on their short-list. This film was originally a simple Flash story but has now become Flashpoint based on the comic book of the same name by Geoff Johns. It's an epic on too as we find Flash going back in time to save his mother resulting in an alternate reality where Superman is a prisoner of the U.S. government, Batman is Bruce Wayne's father Thomas, and Wonder Woman and Aquaman are engaged in a war which could destroy the planet. It looks like The Flash will steal the show in Justice League and his stand alone movie will be essentially a follow-up to that film as Gal Gadot will play Wonder Woman in it with other members of the League expected to reprise their roles as well.

Cast & Crew: No director has been announced yet, but Joby Harold is penning the script, and Ezra Miller, Billy Crudup, Kiersey Clemons, and Gal Gadot are set to star.

Release Date: To Be Announced

The Batman

The Batman

Ben Affleck will again play the role of The Batman in this stand-alone film which will be directed by Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and this summer's War for the Planet of the Apes helmer Matt Reeves. The script is being penned by Argo, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League writer Chris Terrio, and Jeremy Irons is also set to come back as Alfred Pennyworth, along with J.K. Simmons who will reprise his role of Commissioner Gordon from Justice League, while Joe Manganiello is set to play Slade Wilson/Deathstroke. Reeves wants this film to be a noir Hitchcokian thriller which will focus on the detective side of the character. Rumors set the film in Arkham Asylum as Batman is trapped inside with the criminals he's put away over the years and must find a way to escape.

Cast & Crew: Matt Reeves will direct from a script by Reeves and Chris Terrio, and the movie will star Ben Affleck, Jeremy Irons, J.K. Simmons, and Joe Manganiello.

Release Date: To Be Announced

Suicide Squad 2

Suicide Squad 2

A sequel to last year's surprise hit Suicide Squad will be made with most of the cast expected to return. The studios just hired writer/director Gavin O'Conner to helm the film. He's directed such films as Warrior and The Accountant. It's unknown which members of the team will return or what the story will be about. The first film was a bit of a mess but hopefully the studio will allow the director's vision to shine through this time. This cast of character is great and most are excited to see them back on the big screen. Dwayne Johnson is rumored to make his debut as Black Adam here.

Cast & Crew: Gavin O'Conner will write and direct the film, but none of the cast has been confirmed to reprise their roles.

Release Date: To Be Announced

Gotham City Sirens

Gotham City Sirens

Suicide Squad director David Ayer has set Gotham City Sirens as his next DC-based project which will feature Margot Robbie returning as Harley Quinn as she teams-up with Catwoman and Poison Ivy. No word yet on who will play the other two roles although Isla Fisher has been rumored for Ivy and Eiza Gonzalez has been strongly hinting that she'll play Catwoman. This will be a fun movie featuring three femme fatales taking on Gotham City and The Batman in their own unique ways. Robbie got great reception as Quinn so it's just a matter of finding two other actresses who can play off her well and really get into their characters.

Cast & Crew David Ayer will write and direct with Margot Robbie set to play Harley Quinn again.

Release Date: To Be Announced

Nightwing

Nightwing

The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay is currently developing a live-action film with The Accountant writer Bill Dubuque. The story will be about Batman's first sidekick, the original Robin, Dick Grayson after he leaves Gotham to fight crime solo as Nightwing in the city of Bludhaven. McKay shows he understands Batman lore and mythology in The LEGO Batman Movie, so now it's about bringing a street-level hero to life in live-action. There's so much to explore here from his relationship to Batman to his family history. Its gonna be a cool one, and McKay says his lead actor is gonna have to learn gymnastic and martial arts because he wants this to be a gritty action film int eh same vein as The Raid.

Cast & Crew: Chris McKay will direct and write the film with scribe Bill Dubuque, but no casting has been announced yet.

Release Date: To Be Announced

Batgirl

Batgirl

Television auteur and Marvel's The Avengers helmer Joss Whedon has been hired to write, direct, and produce this film about Batman's female sidekick, Batgirl. Bringing Whedon in is brilliant, and apparently, this is a situation where after Zack Snyder brought him in to finish shooting Justice League he pitched Batgirl to the studio and they let him run with it. He really wants to get into the psychology of Barbara Gordon and show us why the daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner Jim Gordon would put on a mask and become a vigilante. He's gonna get to the heart while also delivering an awesome action film. Joss knows how to write female characters and complex family dynamics, so I'm sure this will be no exception.

Cast & Crew: Joss Whedon will write and direct, but no casting has been announced yet.

Release Date: To Be Announced

Justice League Dark

Justice League Dark

Bringing DC Comics' dark, mystical side to life is this film which promises to give fans a character-driven story inspired by classic horror movies.  John Contastine, Zatana, Swamp Thing, Deadman, The Demon, Madame Xanadu, and The Spetre are all expected to appear in Justice League Dark. Guillermo del Toro was originally going to write and direct the film, but he dropped out to work on other projects. The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow helmer Doug Liman then came on board as director, but he also left the project to work on other movies. If this one can get a director that stays it'd be a fun one to see.

Cast & Crew: Gerard Johnstone is currently working on the script, but no director or cast is attached currently.

Release Date: To Be Announced

Man of Steel 2

Man of Steel 2

A sequel to Man of Steel will feature Henry Cavill in the lead role again. Mad Max visionary George Miller and Kingsman: The Secret Service director Matthew Vaughn have been rumored to direct. This movie is expected to take a light, more optimistic approach to the character as he becomes the Superman most audiences know. Rumored villains include Brainiac and Metallo. It could also introduce Supergirl and Steel to the DC Films universe.

Cast & Crew: No writer or director is on board yet, but Henry Cavill is expected to return as Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman.

Release Date: To Be Announced

Black Adam

Black Adam

Wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been attached to play the anti-hero Black Adam for years now. First, he'll appear elsewhere in the DCEU (rumors put him in Suicide Squad 2), but eventually he's getting his own film. He surprisingly will not appear in the Shazam movie even though he's the arch-enemy of that character. A tortured slave in ancient Egypt, Black Adam was the first champion of the wizard Shazam who granted him the abilities of the gods to set him free and bring peace, but Adam was corrupt and used his powers to become a tyrant, so Shazam banished him to the farthest star, and Adam fights his way back to Earth to reclaim his kingdom and kill the wizard. It's a great story that I hope we'll get to see soon.

Cast & Crew: No director or writer is attached currently, but The Rock is set to play the lead role.

Release Date: To Be Announced

Deadshot

Deadshot

A spin-off of Suicide Squad is in development with Will Smith set to reprise his role of Floyd Lawton a.k.a. Deadshot. It's unknown when the film will take place or what the story will be. It'd be fun to see him as an anti-hero, reluctantly teaming up with Batman or another superhero. He's a great actor and was one of the highlights of Suicide Squad. It'd be great to have him as a father and an assassin much like Leon: The Professional.

Cast & Crew: No director or writer have been hired but Will Smith is set to return as the lead character.

Release Date: To Be Announced

Harley Quinn and the Joker

Harley Quinn and the Joker

There's a film about The Joker and Harley Quinn in the works at the studio. However, it's unknown when it will be set. It could adapt the popular Mad Love storyline from Batman: The Animated Series which is essentially the story of how these two met which was touched on briefly in the flashbacks of Suicide Squad. The two actors played so well off each other it'll be great to see them back on the big screen. Hopefully, Batman will have a significant role as well and perhaps we'll get to see more of Arkham Asylum and maybe even get Hugo Strange in a major role. A writer and director were recently hired so this one may be on the fast track to get made sooner rather than later.

Cast & Crew: Glenn Ficarra and John Requa have been hired to write and direct the movie with Jared Leto and Margot Robbie set to reprise their roles.

Release Date: To Be Announced

Lobo

Lobo

Warner Bros. announced a feature film focusing on the DC Comics character Lobo was in development back in in September of 2009 with Guy Ritchie set direct the film. The story would follow the alien bounty hunter as he lands on Earth and teams with a small town girl to stop four fugitive creatures who are bent on wreaking havoc. By 2010 Ritchie left the project, but in April of 2012, Brad Peyton had signed on as writer and director, with Dwayne Johnson entering negotiations to play the titular character. Johnson, though, opted to portray Black Adam instead and Peyton dropped out. Recently, Jason Fuchs was brought in to work on a re-write of the script confirming that the character would be portrayed as he was in the original comic book story arcs.

Cast & Crew: No director or actors have been hired yet but Jason Fuchs is writing the script.

Release Date: To Be Announced

The Joker

The Joker

In a shocking move, Warner Bros. recently announced that a film focusing on the origins of the Joker is being made. The movie does not take place in the shared universe established in their films since 2013's Man of Steel, but instead will be a stand-alone project and begin a series of unconnected one-offs. The plot which takes place in Gotham City during the '80s is being described as a hard-boiled crime drama much like Taxi Driver. Todd Phillips has signed on to direct as well as co-write and co-produce the film, while Scott Silver and Martin Scorsese will co-write and co-produce, respectively. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio is being eyed for the main role, although no formal offer has been made yet. This one could loosely follow Alan Moore's The Killing Joke storyline.

Cast & Crew: Todd Phillips will write and direct with Scott Silver so-writing and Martin Scorsese producing with Leonardo DiCaprio possibly playing the lead role.

Release Date: To Be Announced

Justice League 2

Justice League 2

Director Zack Snyder was expected to return to helm this sequel to the upcoming superhero team-up movie which will most likely feature much of the same cast as well, but now things have been changed up and it may be a different movie entirely. This is a sequel that's up in the air and it's fate will be determined by the box office and critical success of Justice League this winter. It'd be great to see the team back with some new members and a different villain.

Cast & Crew: No director or writer is officially on board yet, but most of the cast from the first Justice League film are expected to return to reprise their roles.

Release Date: To Be Announced

DC Comics Justice League Wonder Woman Aquaman Man of Steel Batman The Flash Cyborg Suicide Squad Nightwing Batgirl Shazam Black Adam Gotham City Sirens Green Lantern Corps
