Following last week’s report of potential actresses being considered for key roles in Birds of Prey, Deadline reports that Fargo and 10 CLoverfield Lane actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Underground‘s Jurnee Smollett-Bell have officially won the roles of Huntress and Black Canary in DC's upcoming Birds of Prey film. Warner Bros. Pictures’ highly-anticipated superhero movie is set to be be released into theaters on February 7, 2020. In her earliest appearances, Huntress was Helena Wayne, the daughter of Batman and Catwoman, but during the ’80s, Huntress was re-imagined as Helena Bertinelli, the daughter of a mob boss who became a brutal vigilante after the death of her family. Meanwhile, Black Canary’s alter ego is Dinah Drake/Dinah Laurel Lance, who didn’t possess any powers until later she became known as a world-class martial arts artist with a superpower called The Canary Cry.

Heroic Hollywood is reporting that both Ewan McGregor and Sharlto Copley are in the running for the part of the movie's main villain, Black Mask. The part was originally offered to Sam Rockwell but he passed on the role. Black Mask has been rumored to be the antagonist for a while now but no casting rumors have surfaced until now. He's a crime boss in Gotham City who usually does battle with Batman in the comics. The character first appeared in Batman #386 in August of 1985 and has since been featured in the Batman: Arkham Origins video game, animated series like The Batman and Batman: The Brave and Bold, and the DC animated original movies Batman: Under the Red Hood and Batman: Bad Blood.

The Birds of Prey project was initially announced ahead of the release of Suicide Squad in summer 2016, with Warner Bros. developing the film with Robbie’s Harley Quinn as the villain and featuring a number of female DC characters, with the likes of Batgirl and the Birds of Prey reportedly also in the mix for the film. The script was penned by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee), who was recently announced to take over scripting duties on DC’s Batgirl solo movie after Joss Whedon’s departure. The Birds of Prey are a mostly female superhero team whose ranks in the DC source material has included Oracle/Batgirl, Black Canary, Huntress, Catwoman, Hawkgirl, Power Girl, Poison Ivy, Vixen, and Katana (Karen Fukuhara), who appeared opposite Harley in Suicide Squad.
