Major actresses are up for roles in the TV and movie reboot!
Casting For Charlie's Angels Movie Reboot Is Underway!
The recently announced Charlie’s Angles reboot is now casting the three leads int he film. According to Variety, Sony Pictures wants actress Kristen Stewart for the lead role in the new movie with Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o as another of the three main characters. Elizabeth Banks is attached to direct the reboot, after making her directorial debut on Pitch Perfect 2. Stewart is well known for her role in the Twilight series, and lately she's gone with more independent films such as Clouds of Sils Maria, Personal Shopper, Equals, and American Ultra. Nyong’o put herself on the map with a magnificent performance in 12 Years a Slave, and has been hidden behind performance-capture work on The Jungle Book and Star Wars since, but will continuing to give unique performances in diverse films such as the upcoming Marvel's Black Panther. No word on who will be cast in the third lead role.
Charlie's Angels was created by Ivan Godd and Ben Roberts and first aired in 1976 and ran until 1981. The show starred Jaclyn Smith, Farah Fawcett, and Kate Jackson as private detectives who fight crime in Los Angeles. The series spawned two feature films starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu in 2000 and 2003 which were both directed by McG. The movie received mostly positive reviews by critics and grossed a combined $523 million worldwide. A TV series reboot was attempted in 2011 starring Minka Kelly, Rachel Taylor, and Annie Ilonzeh, but it failed and was cancelled after only four episodes aired and was not picked up for a second season.
Taking on a female-centric action franchise like Charlie’s Angels could be a refreshing change of pace for both actresses and for Hollywood in general. It'll be interesting to see if actress-turned-director Elizabeth Banks takes the franchise in a more comedic direction or keeps the series balance between comedy, action, and drama. There are others like this coming such as Ocean's 8 which is a continuation of the Ocean's 11 trilogy starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blacnhett, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Rihana, and Sarah Paulson. The Charlie's Angels project has begun casting, so it’ll be interesting to see how this one shapes up. The film is currently on track for a summer 2019 release date.
