Diego Luna to Repirse Role of Cassian Andor in New Star Wars Streaming Series
The Rogue One actor will return to the galaxy far, far away in new Disney streaming series!
Star Wars Rebel Spy Series Announced By Disney!
During an earning call, Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced that Lucasfilm is developing a Rogue One prequel series, which “follows the adventures of rebel spy Cassian Andor during the formative years of the Rebellion.” Rogue One star Diego Luna will return to reprise the role of Andor “Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me,” said Luna in a press release. “I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.” This marks the second Disney streaming series set in the Star Wars universe as The Mandalorian was announced last month which is being produced by Iron Man director Jon Favreau with episodes being directed by Dave Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Taika Waititi, among others.
Per the press release, "The rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire." This leaves the door open for fan-favorite characters from the far reaches of the galaxy far, far away to appear including the likes of Kanan, Hera, Sabine, Ezra, and Zeb from the animated series Star Wars Rebels, as well as Andor's reprogrammed Imperial security droid, K-2S0, voiced by Disney regular Alan Tudyk. We'll also get to discover more about the formation of the Rebel Alliance and it's fight against the Galactic Empire and could be cameos by character who were instrumental in the formation of the Rebellion, including Genevieve O'Reilly's Mon Motha, Jimmy Smitts' Bail Organa or even Ashley Eckstein's Ahsoka Tano. The series will start filming next year, but has no official title or release date, yet.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the first spin-off film set in the galaxy far, far away and followed a group of rebel fighters as they sought to steal the plans of the Death Star from the Galactic Empire. The film was directed by Gareth Edwards, written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy, and starred Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Alan Tudyk, Ben Mendelsohn, Riz Ahmed, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Mads Mikkelsen, and Forest Whitaker. The movie opened on December 16, 2016, was met with generally positive reviews, and grossed a worldwide total of $1.056 billion on a $265 million budget. It received two Oscars for Best Sound Mixing and Best Visual Effects.
