The Hunchback of Notre Dame To Get Live-Action Version From Disney!
According to Deadline, Tony-winning playwright David Henry Hwang is set to write a live-action version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame movie, based on the Victor Hugo novel and the Disney animated movie from 1997. Music is being handled by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, with Josh Gad also serving as producer on the film along with Mandeville. Gad could be up to play the lead character of Quasimodo, but officially Disney hasn't announced anything on the casting front yet. Stephen Schwartz has won three Oscars for his work on The Prince of Egypt and Pocahontas; he also did the original score for the animated Hunchback movie. Alan Menken tops that with no less than eight Oscars under his belt, for his work on Aladdin, Pocahontas, the animated Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid. In short, this is top-shelf Disney animated talented being 'ported over to the live-action side of things, and the fact that they have a celebrated playwright plotting and balancing the main storyline with the musical numbers is also a pretty good sign.
Disney has been turning their animated films into live-action movies over the past few years to great success with the likes of Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Cinderella, Pete's Dragon, The Jungle Book, and Beauty and the Beast. Upcoming releases include Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, Mulan, Lady and the Tramp, Cruella, Lilo & Stitch, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, Pinocchio, Snow White, and The Sword in the Stone. Dumbo is in theaters on March 29, Aladdin will be out on May 24, and The Lion is set for release on July 19, 2019.
