Donnie Yen Joins Disney's Mulan Live-Action Remake
The Star Wars actor joins Disney's new Mulan movie!
Mulan Remake Casts Donnie Yen!
Deadline reports that Chinese actor Donnie Yen will take on the role of Commander Tung, a mentor and teacher to the titular warrior woman in Disney's live-action remake of their 1998 animated hit Mulan. The remake of the beloved Disney animated film recruited Chinese actress Liu Yifei last year to star in the title role, and Yen is the first major addition since that announcement. A number of key roles still need to be cast before the film heads into production, including the male lead Shang, the villainous Shan-Yu, and Mulan’s dragon Mushu — assuming all those characters carry over to the live-action remake. Whale Rider and The Zookeeper’s Wife helmer Niki Caro is set to direct from a script by Lauren Hynek, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Elizabeth Martin.
Disney's success with remaking their animated classic has paid off as Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland grossed over $1 billion worldwide when it was released back in 2010. Since then, the studio has remade Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Pete's Dragon, and Beauty and the Beast. Plenty of other live-action remakes are in various stages of development including Dumbo, The Lion King, Aladdin, Cruella, Peter Pan, and The Little Mermaid. Mulan is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 27, 2020.
