DC Universe Announces Doom Patrol Series!
Today, DC Universe announced a Doom Patrol series is in development for their upcoming streaming service. The project is being produced by Arrow and The Flash mastermind Greg Berlanti, bringing his TV record to 13 total scripted series currently. The show will be a one-hour live-action series and is set to debut in 2019 on the DC Universe digital service. Doom Patrol is a re-imagining of one of DC’s most beloved group of outcast Super Heroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl, and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder a.k.a. The Chief. The Doom Patrol’s members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities – but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found purpose through The Chief, who brought them together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence — and to protect Earth from what they find.
Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them. Picking up after the events of Titans, Doom Patrol will find these reluctant heroes in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg, who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse, but with warning that is hard to ignore: their lives will never, ever be the same. The Doom Patrol characters will appear in the fifth episode of Berlanti’s DC Universe live-action drama Titans, with Bruno Bichir, April Bowlby, Jack Michaels, and Dwain Murphy starring. The direct-to-series order of 13 episodes will be written by Supernatural‘s Jeremy Carver and will be executive produced by Berlanti, Geoff Johns, Jeremy Carver, and Sarah Schechter.
DC Universe is clearly crossing over Titans with Doom Patrol but it's unclear if the recently announced series, Swamp Thing, will also be a part of this shared universe. Swamp Thing, which also debuts in 2019, is being executive produced by James Wan who is also directing DC Films' Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa, set for release into theaters in December. Berlanti’s scripted series include: Arrow, Black Lightning, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Riverdale, Supergirl, the upcoming new take on Sabrina the Teenage Witch titled The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and Titans. Other series set to debut on the DCU include the new animated Harley Quinn series and the third season of Young Justice titled Outsiders.
