Talking to press for his upcoming movie Skyscraper, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson said of his long-in-development DC Films project, “With Black Adam, I don’t think we’re going to start early next year. Early next year right now it looks like I’m going to be shooting Jumanji, and then after that, if everything goes well I’ll shoot a movie called Red Notice with Rawson Thurber again, with Gal Gadot, and another actor yet to be named. But Black Adam possibly at the end of next year. It’s coming along great, the script is coming along great we’re very happy with it.” When asked why he's taking on this character Johnson said, "I've loved the role of Black Adam. I love that he starts off as a slave, that he felt like he was wronged. I've just loved that backstory. I think that Black Adam has always been, to me, the most intriguing superhero." This is good news for fans who've wanted to see the wrestler-turned-actor as a comic book character.

Johnson met with DC Entertainment years ago to begin working on a film project based on one of their properties. The character he chose to portray was Black Adam, a created by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck in December of 1945. His powers come from The Wizard who bestowed him with his significant abilities to help mankind, but his lust for vengeance against his oppressors turned him into a tyrant and he was banished from the planet buy the Wizard. Centuries later The Wizard grants his successor Billy Batson the same powers to combat evil on earth. Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, and Djimon Hounsou have been cast in DC Films' Shazam! which will debut in theaters on April 5, 2019. That film is being directed by David F. Sandburg who has also been rumored to take on the Black Adam film which is being written by Earth to Echo scribe Henry Gayden. If everything works out, Black Adam may get released into theaters as early as 2020.
