The first image from Godzilla sequel King of the Monsters have been revealed via Entertainment Weekly! First up is a look at the film's giant monster as he lights up the sky with his atomic breath. Director Michael Dougherty takes over for Gareth Edwards who helmed the 2014 original, and he says this moment comes at a key point in the film that is a "sort of call to arms." This suggests he will be teaming up possibly with other monsters in the movie, and we already know that Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah will all be featured in the film, so he may be calling on one, two, or all three of them to assist him in taking on a larger threat. There are clearly seeds being planted here for the ultimate crossover coming in 2020, Godzilla vs. Kong which promises to be a battle for the ages.

The second image here shows the human leads of the movie, Stranger Things actress Milly Bobby Brown and Oscar-nominee Vera Farmiga, together. Farmiga is playing Dr. Emma Russell a paleobiologist, both mother to Brown’s Madison Russell and wife to Kyle Chandler's Mark Russell, who works for the secret group known as Monarch. In the film, she and her daughter are kidnapped by another mysterious organization because as Vera states, “She has figured out a way to communicate with the creatures and potentially control them using their bioacoustics on a sonar level. So she is like a DJ for the monsters.” She also cited director Michael Dougherty as being “very careful” and wanting as many takes as possible in order to get it right. In discussing the movie as a whole, Farmiga described it more so about “saving the environment” than a typical monster movie and found that the parables in the script truly drew her to the film. Though she kept quiet on any other details regarding her role, the 44-year-old actress did mention that, despite wrapping principal photography last September, she still had an upcoming day of additional photography on the film.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are crafting their own cinematic universe to rival that of Marvel's and DC's with the MonsterVerse. This is a shared cinematic universe which currently includes 2014's Godzilla and 2017's Kong: Skull Island. Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be the third installment in the series with the major crossover, Godzilla vs. Kong, arriving on May 22, 2020 which will be directed by Adam Wingard. The franchise could also spin-off other monsters into their own films such as Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. Expect a third Godzilla film and a second Kong film in the future too.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is directed by Michael Dougherty, written by Dougherty, Zach Shields, and Mac Borenstein, and stars Vera Farminga, Ken Watanabe, Kyle Chandler, Milly Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O'Shea Jackson, Jr., Aisha Hinds, and Zhang Ziyi. The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as it's members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species - thought to be mere myths - rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance. The film will be in theaters on May 31, 2019.
