The new Star Wars live-action series releases first image, synopsis, and list of directors!
The Mandalorian First Image, Synopsis, & Directors Revealed!
Production on the first Star Wars live-action streaming series has begun! After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic. The series will be written and executive produced by Emmy-nominated producer and actor Jon Favreau, as previously announced, with Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) directing the first episode. Additional episodic directors include Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok). It will be executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist will serve as co-executive producer.
The image evokes strong western vibes which is exciting for fans of those aspects of the Star Wars movies. It's set in a time period we haven't seen on screen, filling in the 30-year gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Surprisingly, no casting announcements have been made, although The Equalizer 2 and Game of Thrones actor Pedro Pascal is the only one who's been rumored for the lead role, so that might be him under the helmet. The directors are very exciting with Dave Filoni, supervising director of both The Clone Wars and Rebels animated series, taking the reigns of the first episode. He's a huge fan of the Mandalorians and focused heavily on the planet of Madalore in both of those shows which made for some of the best Star Wars storytelling since the original trilogy. Bryce Dallas Howard, daughter of fellow actor-turned-director Ron Howard who also helmed this year's Solo: A Star Wars Story, will make her first major directorial effort beyond a short film, music video and TV segment with this series. Rick Famuyiwa has directed multiple critically-acclaimed independent films like Our Family Wedding and Dope, Deborah Chow is known for having helmed episodes of Jessica Jones and Mr. Robot, and Taika Waititi has brought audiences his own unique brand of comedy and adventure with What We Do In The Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and Thor: Ragnarok.
