Gladiator Sequel Officially In Development
Ridley Scott's epic is getting a sequel!
A Sequel To Gladiator Is On It's Way!
It's been announced that Paramount has officially greenlit a sequel to the 2000 epic hit film Gladiator! The film won five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor for Russell Crowe, Best Visual Effects, Best Costume Design, and Best Sound Mixing, and was nominated for another seven Oscars for Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Joaquin Phoenix, Best Director for Ridley Scott, Best Original Score for Hans Zimmer, Best Art Decoration, Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing. A prequel was rumored to be in development in 2001, but soon after, attention was focused on a sequel set 15 years later which would follow Lucius and the rule of the Praetorian Guard. However, Crowe and Scott were interested in resurrecting Maximus to explore Roman beliefs about the afterlife.
Initially, Douglas Wick, Walter Parkes, David Frazoni, and Jon Loagn were working on the first drafts of the screenplay, but their story ideas couldn't get Scott and Crowe on board. In 2006, Nick Cave wrote a script which had Maxiums brought back to life by the Roman gods to defend Christians from Roman persecution, and subsequently transported to other time periods including World War II, Vietnam, and the modern day Pentagon to help turn the tide of history. This idea was abandoned and now The Town and Top Gun: Maverick writer, Peter Craig, has been hired to pen the latest version of the screenplay, but story details have been kept under wraps. No casting or release date has been announced, but Ridley Scott is expected to return as director. Scott has come back to his Alien franchise, but only to very little success, so it's surprising that he'd try it again with this beloved film which in no way sets up a sequel and no one wanted a follow-up to in the first place.
