Green Lantern Corps May Cast Tom Cruise; Hire Mission: Impossible Director
DC Films' Green Lantern movie might be directed by Chris MacQuarrie and star Tom Cruise!
Tom Cruise Could Star In Green Lantern Corps! Chris MacQuarrie May Direct!
Reports are now coming in that Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment would like for Christopher MacQuarrie to helm their upcoming Green Lantern Corps film. The director has worked as a writer on The Usual Suspects, Jack the Giant Slayer, and Edge of Tomorrow, and as both writer and director on Jack Reacher, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, and the upcoming Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Obviously, he's worked with Tom Cruise on almost all of those projects which could mean that Cruise himself will be cast as Hal Jordan in the movie. Just imagine seeing Top Gun's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell as an older version of DC Comics' hotshot pilot Hal Jordan. Also, a logline for the film has surfaced which reads: "Former test pilot Hal Jordan, now a veteran of the intergalactic group of protectors of peace and justice known as the Green Lantern Corps, mentors young recruit John Stewart." This fits with what we've heard of the project as it's said to be "Lethal Weapon in space" setting itself apart from other superhero flicks.
The DC Films slate is in shambles after the disappointing failure both critically and financially of Justice League. With Man of Steel, Batman v Superman : Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Wonder Woman, Warner Bros., DC Entertainment, and Zack Snyder had built an interesting and complex cinematic universe which set itself apart from Marvel's own interconnected movie franchise by embracing a darker tone and allowing each director to put his or her own unique stamp on each story and character. It seems that the studio now has no idea what to do as various films are now in different stages of development including Aquaman, Shazam, Wonder Woman 2, The Batman, Cyborg, Green Lantern Corps, Batgirl, Black Adam, Flashpoint, Gotham City Sirens, Justice League Dark, Suicide Squad 2, Birds of Prey, Deadshot, Deathstroke, The Joker and Harley Quinn, Justice League 2, Harley Quinn, Lobo, and The Joker. Time will tell which of those films will get made, if any.
You can watch the trailers for Top Gun, Lethal Weapon, and 2011's Green Lantern below. Combine all of them and you might get an idea of what kind of movie Green Lantern Corps will be. It'll be interesting to see what comes of this project as the logline and film inspirations for this project have us very interested. Having a a strong mentor-protege relationship at the center of GLC could help it stand apart and bring some complex character interactions and development to the space-cop story. The films with current release dates are Aquaman set for December 21, 2018, Shazam on April 5, 2019, Wonder Woman on November 1, 2019, Cyborg on April 3, 2020, and Green Lantern Crops is still currently set for release into theaters on June 19, 2020.
