Villain Cast In Third How To Train Your Dragon Film!

Oscar-winning actor F. Murray Abraham has been cast to voice the villain in DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 3. Universal will be releasing the final film in the trilogy, directed and written by Dean DeBlois and produced by Bonnie Arnold and Brad Lewis, in 2019. It will also feature returning cast members Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Kit Harrington, and Cate Blanchett. The film series follows the adventures of young Viking Hiccup and the rare Night Fury dragon Toothless he finds and learns to train on the Viking island of Berk. The films are loosely based on the British book series by Cressida Cowell and there is currently a TV series airing, DreamWorks Dragons: Race to the Edge, based on the films.

The final entry in the story of a boy and his dragon will follow the events in How to Train Your Dragon 2, which ended with Hiccup and Toothless having become the chief of Berk and Alpha dragon, respectively, after defeating the Bewilderbeast and Drago. So far, we know that the books and the films will have similar endings – with an explanation to why dragons are no more – despite the books diverging from the films. Deadline is confirming that Abraham, who is known for his roles in films ranging from Scarface and The Grand Budapest Hotel, will be voicing the villainous Grimmel in the upcoming animated movie. Here is what Chris deFaria, Head of DreamWorks Animation Film Group, said about the casting choice: “We are thrilled that F. Murray Abraham has joined our How To Train Your Dragon 3 cast as the villainous Grimmel. This character brings a captivating new story line to the culmination of our trilogy. There is a gentlemanly calm to this sinister role, one that dovetails beautifully with this iconic actor’s immense range and talents.”

Deadline is also reporting that Abraham “won’t be donning a Scottish accent, rather a deep-baritone voice in the classic villain sense”, giving us the sense that his character Grimmel will be more of a classic villain for the How to Train Your Dragon film trilogy. Abraham first became popular in the acting scene when he won an Oscar for his role his role as Antonio Salieri in Amadeus in 1984. Since, he has starred in films like  All the President’s Men (1976), Scarface (1983), The Name of the Rose (1986), Last Action Hero (1993), Star Trek: Insurrection (1998), Finding Forrester (2000), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), and The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014).  He is also known for portraying black ops specialist Dar Adal in the Showtime drama series Homeland, which he was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2015.
