Indiana Jones 5 Being Written By Solo Scribe Jon Kasdan
The next Indiana Jones script is coming from the Solo screenwriter!
Jon Kasdan is Raiding the Next Indy Movie!
According to multiple sources, Steven Spielberg and Lucasfilm have hired Jonathan Kasdan to pen the screenplay for the fifth Indiana Jones film! He replaces David Koepp who was set to write the movie back when it was announced in March of 2016. Koepp also wrote the lackluster 2008 installment of the franchise, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and has been one of Spielberg’s go-to scribes for years, writing such films as Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and War of the Worlds, not to mention non-Spielberg blockbusters like Spider-Man and Mission: Impossible. Frank Marshall is returning to produce with his wife and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Steven Spielberg is once again directing the sequel, which will star Harrison Ford in what will likely be his final turn as the daring archaeologist who is perhaps his most famous character other than that space-faring, smuggling scoundrel, Han Solo.
This past March, Spielberg announced plans to start production on Indy 5 in the U.K. in April 2019, as the tentpole is slated to hit theaters on July 10, 2020. However, this major shakeup means that that production start date will unlikely be met, so the release date is also up in the air at this point. This is a good sign as it shows the filmmakers will not move forward until all parties involved, namely Spielberg and Ford, are happy with the story. The previous four films in the Indiana Jones series have collectively grossed nearly $2 billion worldwide, and after the mixed response to the most recent entry, Spielberg is pulling out all the stops to send Ford’s Indy off on a high note, especially if Kasdan plans to pass the franchise torch to a younger actor in this film. He also may be enlisting the help of his father, Lawrence Kasdan, with whom he wrote Solo, and who counts the one that started it all, Raiders of the Lost Ark, among his many credits. It's unknown when Koepp left the project, but it seems Kasdan was hired very recently.
There have been no details on the story so far, but it's being reported that the MacGuffin in the film will be the Fountain of Youth which could be an interesting plot device considering this may be an aging Ford's final film in the series. This means we could see a younger actor take over the role or have Indy hand the franchise off to a new character, possibly even turning the fabled Fountain into a time machine of sorts to bring us back to the 1930s era the franchise began in. Steven Spielberg has directed all four films in the series including 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark, 1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. These movies have starred some of the most talented actors including Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, John Rhys-Davies, Denholm Elliott, Kate Capshaw, Jonathan Ke Quan, Alison Doody, Sean Connery, Cate Blanchett, John Hurt, and Shia LaBeouf. All of the films iconic scores are composed by the legendary John Williams who will also return to score the fifth film. The movie is set for a theatrical release on July 10, 2020.
