According to multiple sources, Academy Award-winning actor Jared Leto has signed on to play Morbius The Living Vampire in Sony's upcoming Spider-Man spin-off film. Daniel Espinosa, who directed Safe House and Life, will helm the project with a script from the writing duo of Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, whose past credits include Netflix's Lost in Space, Power Rangers, Gods of Egypt, The Last Witch Hunter, and Dracula Untold. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing alongside Lucas Foster. While a release date has yet-to-be-set, production is expected to begin sometime this year.  Leto, of course, is also well-known for playing the Joker in the critically-reviled Suicide Squad and his role as the Crown Prince of Crime in the DC Films universe will remain unaffected by his new role in Sony's Spider-Verse. He's in fact set to reprise the role of the Batman villain in his own movie, as well as multiple other films such as Harley Quinn and the Joker, and possibly even writer/director Matt Reeves' The Batman.

Created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane, first appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #101 in October 1971, Dr. Michael Morbius is imbued with vampiric abilities after a genetic experiment mean tot cure his rare blood disease has unintended consequences. His insatiable lust for human blood drives him mad and he becomes a vigilante who hunts down the criminals who prey on the weak. He has been both a friend and foe of Spidey in the comics. This will mark his first appearance in live-action, but he has appeared in several animated television shows such as Spider-Man: The Animated Series and Ultimate Spider-Man, as well as multiple video games.
