Joaquin Phoenix In Talks To Play The Joker
The Academy Award-nominee might play the Clown Prince of Crime!
The Joker Could be Played By Joaquin Phoenix!
It was reported last year that Warner Bros. was developing a standalone movie for The Joker delving into the iconic villain's origin story and Variety now reports that Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to play the Batman villain. Studio negotiations haven't begun yet but he's said to be co-writer/director Todd Phillips' top choice and has already agreed to take on the role. This isn't the first time Phoenix has flirted with a superhero movie role as he nearly played Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the titular hero in Marvel's Doctor Strange. Leonardo DiCaprio was initially approached for the role of the Clown Prince of Crime in this movie, but those negotiations broke down. Phillips met with Phoenix late last year and he's now waiting for the studio to make it official. The trade also confirms that Scott Silver will join Phillips as co-writer in the movie which is set to, "delve into what it took for the Joker to become a mastermind criminal." Also sources say that, "the story will take place in the ’80s and have more of the look of a gritty crime drama than comic-book movie."
Actor and musician Jared Leto is still expected to reprise his version of the character in Suicide Squad 2 which is set to begin filming later this year. The first actor to take on the iconic role was Caesar Romero who starred alongside Adam West's Batman in 1966's Batman: The Movie. Jack Nicolson was next up to portray the bad guy in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman movie opposite Michael Keaton's Dark Knight. Then Australian actor Heath Ledger played the part in the 2008 Oscar-winning film The Dark Knight from director Christopher Nolan with Christian Bale's Batman. Star Wars actor Mark Hamill voices The Joker in Batman: The Animated Series, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Justice League Action Batman: The Killing Joke and the Arkham video game series.
