Mary Poppins Is Back For More!

Making a sequel to a 54-year-old film is a challenging task. The original is a beloved classic by generation of film fans which means there's a built in fan base but that most of them are going to be highly critical of any follow-ups. However, Disney took on the challenge with one of their most frequent collaborators in the director's chair and a talented cast to make another magical musical. I can gladly say they've done just that with this stunning sequel.

The team of actors assembled here is nothing short of great. Taking on the iconic role of Mary Poppins herself is Emily Blunt who imitates Julie Andrews just enough to not take you out of the movie while putting her own spin of the character. She does a wodnerful job playing the part of the mystical nanny and nails the singing and dancing as well. Speaking of singing and dancing none are better than the sweet Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack the Lamplighter. Supporting roles are also filled out well by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh, Joel Dawson, Julie Walters, Emily Mortimer, Meryl Streep, and Dick Van Dyke. However, Ben Whishaw is the true star of the movie as his pathos-filled performances is at the heart of this meaningful story.

It's got some truly stunning 2D animated sequences which show audiences how far that storytelling medium has come in the last several decades. It's got gorgeous sets that look exactly like the ones used in the original 1964 movie. The costumes are authentic and beautifully realized. It's a bold choice to not use of the previous songs, but it's an inspired choice as all of the new music is so much fun and helps tell the story of the film. The production design is phenomenal are it ties us into the era flawlessly drawing us into this world.

This sequel is a great follow-up to the original classic from the Mouse House. As much as I like her, not once did I miss Julie Andrews in the role as Blunt takes over for her making for a practically perfect Mary Poppins in every way. The song and dance sequences are magical and the cast does a great job in their roles. It's a call back to old Hollywood musicals with a modern twist. I greatly enjoyed this film and give it an 8.5 out of 10.
