Pacific Rim Anime Series To Debut On Netflix!
Via The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix and Legendary Entertainment are developing an anime series based on the Pacific Rim film franchise! The synopsis for the show reads: "Returning to the epic battle of Kaiju and Jeagers, this original anime series will expand upon the story of the first two live action movies and follow two siblings — an idealistic teenage boy and his naïve younger sister — who are forced to pilot an abandoned Jaeger across a hostile landscape in a desperate attempt to find their missing parents." This Pacific Rim anime series will be co-showrun by Thor: Ragnarok writer Craig Kyle, and X-Men: Evolution's Greg Johnson. It is unclear exactly when the series will debut.
Pacific Rim is the brainchild of Guillermo del Toro who directed the first feature film back in 2013 and also penned the script along with Travis Beacham. That movie starred Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, Ron Perlman, and Idris Elba, and followed human pilots of giant robots called jaegers which are built to battle huge monsters or kaiju who arrive through a portal on the bottom of the Pacific ocean to wreck havoc on our world. The first film earned a worldwide total of $411 million on a budget of $200 million and was met with generally positive reviews from critics. A sequel was made in 2018 by director Steven S. DeKnight and written by DeKnight, Emily Carmichael, Kira Snyder, and T.S. Nowlin. It starred John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, and Cailee Spaeny and picked up the storyline ten years later. The follow-up made $290 million at the box office on a budget of $150 million and was met with mixed reviews. Look for the anime series to debut in late 2019 or 2020.
