Today, the first official image from Shazam! has been released online! As you can see, it features Billy Batson - in his heroic form - enjoying a soda with his buddy Freddy Freeman. Apparently, Billy will be assigned to a new foster home where he befriends comic book fanboy Freddy. However, when his subway ride is interrupted by a mysterious Wizard looking for the best possible person to inherit his powers, he becomes Shazam. It looks like he's stepped straight out of the source material.  Director David Sandberg reveals, "I wanted to keep the shorter cape as a throwback to the original because that’s something that sets him apart from Superman or Batman. It makes him feel a bit more Golden Age superhero, which is the vibe I’m going for."

The image perfectly encapsulates the character as a boy in the form of a man with superpowers. It's like Tom Hanks' Big got mixed up in a blender with Superman. The character was created by C.C. Beck and Bill Parker in 1939 debuting in Whiz Comics #2 in February of 1940. Batson gets his powers from The Wizard, an ancient being with great power who bestows the powers of Shazam to a worthy mortal to protect the earth from any threat. His name is actually an acronym representing the Greek gods who grant him his powers including Solomon's wisdom, Hercules' strength, Atlas' flight, Zeus' lightning, Achilles' agility, and Mercury's speed. His rogues gallery includes the brilliant Dr. Sivana and his corrupt predecessor Black Adam.

Actor Zachary Levi is taking on the role of young Billy Batson's superhero form Shazam while Asher Angel plays Billy. The cast also includes Grace Fulton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Faithe Herman, Cooper Andrews, and Marta Milans with Mark Strong, Djimon Hounsou. It's unknown if the movie is connected to the larger DC Extended Universe or not. Rumors have Henry Cavill making a cameo as Superman which would tie it into the previous films like Man of Steel, Wonder Woman, and Justice League. The film is set for release on April 5, 2019.
