New Spider-Man Movie To Get Sequel & Spin-Off!
Via The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Animation is currently developing a sequel to next month’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, as well as a spinoff headlined by female characters! According to the report, Sony has tapped Joaquim Dos Santos to helm the Into the Spider-Verse sequel featuring Shameik Moore returning as Miles Morales. The team of Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman co-directed the original film. Dos Santos is no stranger to animation, having worked on series like Justice League Unlimited and Avatar: The Last Airbender. He’s also one of the showrunners for Netflix’s Voltron: Legendary Defender. The Expendables, Godzilla, and the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 scribe, David Callaham, is writing the screenplay for the follow-up.
Meanwhile, Lauren Montgomery is Sony’s choice to direct the female-centric spinoff with Bek Smith writing the screenplay. Smith also wrote on the Zoo television series. Montgomery is known for co-directing animated DC movies like Batman: Year One and Superman/Batman: Apocalypse. This movie will focus on Spider-Gwen who appears in Into the Spider-Verse as voiced by Hailee Steinfeld who is expected to reprise the role. Other characters who could potentially appear include Peni Parker, Spider-Women, Madame Web, Spider-Girl, Silk, Black Cat, and Silver Sable. The studio could create more spin-offs featuring the Sinister Six which is a property that's been on the back-burner for years, and could also adapt the scripts for the long-in-development Black Cat and Silver Sable movies.
Sony’s confidence in Into the Spider-Verse certainly bodes well for the film’s success. Of course, this is also the same studio that greenlit two more entries in The Amazing Spider-Man series before that franchise’s second installment fell short of expectations. Although Into the Spider-Verse looks visually dazzling, it’s probably best that we take this news with a grain of salt. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, written by Lord and Rodney Rothman, and stars Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Velez, John Mulaney, Nicholas Cage, Liev Schreiber, and Kimiko Glenn with Stan Lee. The film arrives only in theaters on December 14.
