Matt Smith To Appear In Star Wars!
A new report from Variety claims that Doctor Who actor Matt Smith has joined the cast of Star Wars: Episode IX! He has been cast in an undisclosed role in the upcoming sequel from director J.J. Abrams. The cast of the film continues to grow even as shooting is currently underway in the U.K. The rest of the cast includes Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver, as well as newcomers Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Dominic Monaghan, and Naomi Ackie. Billy Dee Williams is reprising his role as Lando Calrissian, Mark Hamill will also be returning as Luke Skywalker, and Anthony Daniels will reprise his role at C-3PO as well. Carrie Fisher will be featured as Leia Organa in the final installment of the Skywalker saga, using previously unreleased footage shot for 2015's The Force Awakens and last year's The Last Jedi. Penning the script are Abrams and Oscar-winner Chris Terrio.
Smith gained worldwide fame when he was cast as the eleventh Doctor on the hit British science fiction series Doctor Who in 2010 and played the role until the end of the series' seventh season in 2014. He has appeared in major feature films like Terminator Genisys and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies in 2015 and 2016. He also played the role of Prince Phillip in the first two seasons of the acclaimed Netflix series The Crown. It's unknown if he'll be a member of the Resistance, The First Order, or play some kind of other role in the Star Wars universe. The currently untitled Star Wars: Episode IX is in theaters on December 20, 2019.
