Steven Spielberg To Direct Blackhawk Movie For DC
The most famous director of all time is set to bring DC characters to life on the big screen!
Blackhawk Movie Coming From DC & Steven Spielberg!
On the heels of their successful collaboration on Ready Player One, Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment are again teaming with Warner Bros. Pictures to produce the action adventure Blackhawk, with Spielberg also potentially directing the film. Based on the classic DC property, the project will mark the filmmaker’s first feature centered around characters from DC Comics. The announcement was made today by Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group. Spielberg’s longtime collaborator David Koepp, who penned the scripts for Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and others, will write the script, which is based on DC Comics’ Blackhawk character created by Will Eisner, Bob Powell, and Chuck Cuidera for Quality Comics in 1941. The film has no release date yet.
In making the announcement, Emmerich stated, “We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure. We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing ‘Blackhawk’ to movie audiences worldwide.” Spielberg will produce the film together with Kristie Macosko Krieger, under the Amblin Entertainment banner, while Sue Kroll will executive produce, under her Kroll & Co. Entertainment shingle. Spielberg noted, “It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring ‘Ready Player One’ to the screen. They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on ‘Blackhawk.’” Spielberg’s next two films are the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise and a remake of the musical West Side Story. Blackhawk will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
The Blackhawk characters have been featured in animation multiple times, but never in live-action before. They appeared in the seaon one finale of the animated Justice League TV series. You can watch a clip of them in action alongside the world's finest superheroes below. Blackhawk is the leader of a squadron of ace fighter pilots in World War II who battle Nazis and other fantastic super-villains and war machines. Spielberg's no stranger to World War II-era adventures or Nazi-fighting heroes, so this project is right up his ally and fits perfectly with his sensibilities. While WB have many DC properties in development right now, this announcement and collaboration means that Blackhawk will most likely hit theaters sooner rather than later. It's unknown if the film will connect to the larger DC-based cinematic universe, but it's certainly possible we could see an appearance by Wonder Woman or a mention of the Justice Society of America. Check back for more info on this upcoming action/adventure film later.
