Super Mario Bros. Animated Film In The Works At Illumination
The makers of Despicable Me might produce a Mario movie!
Animated Super Mario Bros. Movie In Development!
As the Wall Street Journal reports (via iO9), Nintendo is close to making a deal with Illumination Entertainment to make an animated Super Mario feature film. THR confirms that the companies are near a deal, citing their own sources. The negotiations had been going on for about a year, buoyed by the theme-park partnership between Universal and Nintendo. Presumably, the deal is currently for one film with the potential to further franchise the iconic video game property from there. It’s status: “early development”, so don’t expect much on this front for a few years. Illumination Entertainment currently has four untitled films slated for release in 2021, 2022, and 2023, so perhaps one of them will fall to Super Mario. The video game property was made into a live-action film in 1993, but that film was met with negative reception from critics and audiences alike.
Illumination Entertainment has produced the highly successful Despicable Me trilogy as well as the $1 billion Minions spin-off. For a relatively new studio they have had a vast amount of success. The company has also made other hit movies such as Hop, Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, The Secret Life of Pets, and Sing. They've announced upcoming projects including Dr. Seuss' The Grinch, The Secret Life of Pets 2, Minons 2, and Sing 2. They also have untitled films slated to be released on July 2, 2021, July 1, 2022, December 21, 2022, and June 30, 2023.
