Supergirl Movie In Development
Writer hired to pen Supergirl movie!
Warner Bros. & DC Producing Supergirl Film!
According to Deadline, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are producing a feature film version of Supergirl! Writer Oren Uziel, who penned the recent Netflix movie The Cloverfield Paradox and 22 Jump Street, has been tapped by the studio to pen the screenplay. He's also working on the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie and an upcoming Mortal Kombat adaptation. This film will not tie into the current television series starring Melissa Benoist. This is a somewhat surprising move by the studio as they are trying to get their superhero properties back on track, and you'd think they'd start with Superman and Batman before moving onto their sidekicks. However, with the promising looks at Shazam, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman 1984 at Comic-Con this summer, it seems as thought they've got a handle on things by relying on visionary directors to tell separate stories before rushing to a big team-up movie.
Supergirl was created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino first appearing in Action Comic #252 in May of 1959. Her real name is Kara Zor-El and she is the cousin of Superman. Coming from the same planet Krypton, Kara was a teenager when her homeworld was destroyed but due to her spacecraft being knocked off course she lands on Earth years after her cousin, whom she was supposed to protect, after he's grown into adulthood. She has been shown to be even more powerful than the Man of Steel and has been featured in animated series like Justice League Unlimited, animated movie Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, a live-action film in 1984, which was a spin-off of the Christopher Reeve films, the live-action series Smallville, and a new TV series on The CW. She's been played by Nicholle Tom, Summer Glau, Helen Slater, Laura Vandervoort, and Melissa Benoist.
