Top Gun: Maverick Gets Release Date & Director
The sequel to the 1980s hit has director and release date!
Top Gun 2 Has 2019 Release Date & Oblivion Director
After the recent announcement made by iconic actor and producer Tom Cruise that a sequel to his 1987 hit film Top Gun is being made, fans could wait to see the movie. Now we know exactly how long we'll have to wait. Paramount has set a July 12, 2019 release date for the follow-up to late director Tony Scott's action film. Also, word comes that Joseph Kosinski will direct the new movie. Kosinski worked with Cruise on the 2013 sci-fi flick Oblivion and also made the sequel to 1982's Tron, so he's no stranger to bringing back popular old movies to a modern audience and has a great working relationship with Cruise who likes re-teaming with directors he likes for multiple projects. The young director has a unique visual style which will be well-suited to the airborne movie. For proof, just watch 2010's Tron: Legacy or Oblivion and be amazed by the aerial battles in those films. It's said that Kosinski also has written the story which Cruise says will feature jets, but is also rumored to put drone warfare on full display. All other plot details are being kept under wraps for now. Val Kilmer is the only other star of the original who has public stated that he wants in on the sequel.
Top Gun: Maverick is written and directed by Joseph Kosinski and stars Tom Cruise with no other cast confirmed as of yet. The plot will reportedly focus on Maverick thirty years later as he trains the next generation of pilots in a world where drone warfare is becoming more and more common. The film will be released into theaters on July 12, 2019. The original film is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.
