Writer Hired To Pen Kitty Pryde X-Men Movie Script
The upcoming X-Men spin-off has a writer!
Brian Michael Bednis To Write Kitty Pryde Movie!
Comic writer Brian Michael Bendis is known for creating Miles Morales in the Ultimate Spider-Man comic books, as well as Jessica Jones, now the subject of a Netflix/Marvel series. Now, he'll be writing the script for director Tim Miller's upcoming X-Men film which will focus on the young mutant Kitty Pryde. The character, who has the mutant ability to "phase" or pass through solid objects, was created by John Byrne and Chris Claremont and first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #129 in January of 1980. She was played by actress Ellen Page in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand and 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. Kitty Pryde, also known as Shadowcat, also starred in her own short lived X-Men animated series. Tim Miller directed another X-Men spin-off, Deadpool, which grossed over $783 million, and he’s currently in pre-production on the next Terminator film for Paramount and Fox. Miller did visual effects for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and was the second unit director for Thor: The Dark World.
The story for the film is reportedly based on X-Men #143 (also the current working title of the film) which has Kitty battling a demon at the X-Mansion while the rest of the X-Men are away for the Christmas holiday. This is an Alien-esque plot which could work very well as a stand alone movie for the character. At the end of the comic the rest of the X-Men show up to help her resolve the issue, but it's unknown if that would be the ending of the movie version. It'd be fun to see cameos from the new X-Men introduced in 2016's Apocalypse and this year's Dark Phoenix along with James McAvoy as Professor X. This could be a great one-off, spin-off for the franchise which keeps reinventing itself and creating new stories with fan-favorite characters which is exactly what it needs to do to stay fresh.
