Today, Legendary and Warner Bros. have released our first look at the sequel to Pacific Rim. The first film, released in 2013, was written and directed by Guillermo del Toro and took in $411 million at the worldwide box office. The first film followed a group of pilots who control giant robots called Jaegers which battle giant monsters known as Kaiju which come to Earth through an interdimensional portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. In the sequel, the globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim: Uprising. Taking over for del Toro is Steven S. DeKnight who helmed the Netflix series Daredevil in his feature film-making debut. It looks like a much brighter film while remaining tonally similar which is a good sign. The cast is great and the action looks insane as it reminds us of The Avengers with giant robots.
The rebellious Jake Pentecost is a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori —who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction. Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara, as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.
Pacific Rim Uprising is directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Netflix’s Daredevil, STARZ’s Spartacus), written by DeKnight, Emily Carmichael, Kira Snyder, and T.S. Nowlin, produced by Guillermo del Toro, Thomas Tull, John Jashni, Mary parent Cale Boyter, Femi Oguns, and John Boyega, and stars Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Rinko Kikuchi, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona, and Charlie Day. Jake Pentecost, son of Jaeger pilot Stacker Pentecost who gave his life saving the world in the Battle of the Breach, has abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld, but when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed he seeks justice for the fallen by uniting with a rival pilot and young hacker to join a global uprising against the forces of extinction. The film is in theaters on March 23.
