From Hell or High Water director David Mackenzie, Outlaw King is based on a true story and stars Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce, a man who claims the Scottish crown, assembles an army, and stands up to the tyranny of their English overlord King Edward I and his son, the Prince of Wales. The untold, true story follows Robert The Bruce as he transforms from defeated nobleman, to reluctant King, to outlaw hero over the course of an extraordinary year. Forced into battle in order to save his family, his people and his country from the oppressive English occupation of medieval Scotland, Robert rallies a ragtag group of men to face off against the wrath of the world's strongest army.
This film is essentially a sequel to 1995's Braveheart directed by and starring Mel Gibson as William Wallace, a Scotsman who led a rebellion against English rule. Mackenzie is a Scottish filmmaker so this story is no doubt personal to him. He recently made waves with his Oscar-nominated western Hell or High Water which also starred Chris Pine, and although this is a very different kind of film for Mackenzie, he appears to have a very strong handle on the expanded scope and story. Outlaw King is scripted by Mackenzie, Bash Doran, James MacInnes, Mark Bomback, and David Harrower, and also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Florence Pugh, Billy Howle, Tony Curran, Stephen Dillane, James Cosmo, and Sam Spruell. Outlaw King will be released on Netflix and in select theaters on November 9th.
